Take-Two Announced ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ Ships 75 Million Copies Worldwide; 'NBA 2K17' Near 7 Million

"Grand Theft Auto V" has proved that despite being over 3 years old, it is still one of the highest-selling games of all time, and one of the most expensive to develop as well. Take-Two Interactive recently announced that the action-adventure video game has shipped 75 million copies, while NBA 2K17 has nearly 7 million shipped units.

During an earnings call, Rockstar Game's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, reported the open-world action game has shipped, to date, 75 million copies worldwide. Although "shipped" does not necessarily mean sold, simply copies sent to retailers, this is still a good indicator as to how the game is performing all over the globe. A growing number of gamers are still visiting Los Santos.

Last November 2016, the company announced that they had already shipped 70 million copies of the game. This means a massive 5 million has been shipped globally in a span of 3 months.

"'Grand Theft Auto V' and 'Grand Theft Auto Online' continue to outperform our expectations as they have in every quarter since their release," said Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two CEO. PlayStation Lifestyle reports that Zelnick also noted that Rockstar Games has "many more" updates planned for "GTA Online," which saw a record number of players in December 2016.

In other news, Take-Two also announced that "Mafia III" and "Civilization VI" have shipped 5 million units and passed the 1.5 million mark, respectively. "Mafia III" set the record for 2K when it hit 4.5 million during its launch week. Meanwhile, "NBA 2K17" shipped almost 7 million copies, 10% higher compared with "NBA 2K16."

Although "NBA 2K17" couldn't touch the numbers attained by "Grand Theft Auto V," Take-Two's 2nd most successful game is still "NBA 2K17," according to Digital Trends. CEO Zelnick said that collectively, players of the basketball simulation video game have more than 1 billion matches, which is more than half of those in the multiplayer mode.

"Grand Theft Auto V" is now in the same blockbuster league with "Wii Spots" that sold 82.79 million copies and "Minecraft" that had 100 million sold copies. "GTAV" was first launched on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2013. Then, it was released on PS4, PC, and Xbox One 2 years later.
