Nokia has decided to share its map application with Apple and Google Inc this week as a way of creating more competition amongst the companies.
The world's leading smartphone manufacturer is currently preparing to launch an app called 'Here' which will be made available to those who own Apple products like the iPhone 5, iPad mini and Google Android-based smartphones.
The 'Here' application includes specific features like voice-based walking navigation, map editing, and public transportation directions according to the company press release.
"With Here, we can extend our 20 years of location expertise to new devices and operating systems that reach beyond Nokia," CEO Stephen Elop said in a press statement. "As a result, we believe that more people benefit from and contribute to our leading mapping and location service."
If Nokia is able to sell the application successfully through each company, than it will be considered a major win over Google. The iPhone has been using Google's mapping technology since its own mapping app has been considered a bust so far.
The Nokia Lumia 920 hasn't been selling as well as the iPhone 4 and 5 did in its first full week of sales. The phone is also behind smartphones that use Google's android operating system. The company is doing what they can to try improving sales numbers however.
"Maps are hard to get right-but location is revolutionizing how we use technology to engage with the real world," Michael Halbherr, executive vice president of location and commerce for the 'Here' brand, said in a press statement. "That's why we have been investing and will continue to invest in building the world's most powerful location offering, one that is unlike anything in the market today."
The newest 920 device also contains a mapping app called City Lens. This helps people point the camera on the phone at objects and visualize data written on it through the screen. The app contains a database with information for locations for around 200 countries and has more downloads than the Apple map system.
