This week at Detroit Motor Show, people saw the return of two great American SUVs. Last Sunday, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced its plans to update the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. The following day, Ford relayed a new version of the Ford Bronco. Both vehicles will be released by the year 2020.
The Grand Wagoneer and the Bronco last rolled out from the assembly line in 1991 and 1996, respectively. Their demise was rather ironic since it happened when SUVs were emerging as popular vehicles in the U.S. The SUVs remain a hot item since up to this day.
Ford and Jeep did not disclose any details about the vehicles' specs and features. But Ford confirmed that the Bronco will be a midsized SUV, which design is a throwback to the original Broncos of the 1960s and 1970s.
FCA's decision to revive its Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer is driven by the continued demand for larger utility vehicles. The automaker has allotted $1 billion to resurrect the classic SUV. The vehicles will be manufactured at its plants in Michigan and Ohio.
FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne clarified that the revival of the Wagoneers and the company's investment strategy in the U.S. were not due to U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's "Made in the USA" propaganda. He added that the company has been discussing this development since 2015.
Marchionne talked about FCA's realignment of its footprint in the U.S. The announcement to revive the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer is part of the company's retooling of its manufacturing plants in the U.S. Both SUVs will be released as full-sized cars larger than Grand Cherokee.
