SPIKE TV's "Nissan GT Academy" returns this week for a second season to determine which "Gran Turismo" video game player has the ability to become a professional race car driver.
In partnership with Sony PlayStation and Nissan, the first six episodes of the series will air on SPIKE starting Thursday, Nov. 1 at 11:30 p.m. The following week each episode will air again on MTV2.
The show's first season was a hit in North America and the competition has already produced race winners in more than one country. Season one winner Lucas Ordonez won the P2 Class at 24 Hours of Le Mans 2011 in a Nissan car according to the Nissan press release.
Contestants for the reality show were selected after an online competition of the top 32 registered Grand Turismo gamers met at Comic-Con in San Diego, CA. 16 of the 32 players players were named finalists for "GT Academy" after two days of intense racing competitions at the event.
Over the next six weeks, the 16 players selected will be put through a boot camp that will combine psychological and physical competitions as well as real-life on-track driving in many different types of racing vehicles according to the show's website.
"'GT Academy' is a program that we are really pleased to be a part of. It reinforces our values of excitement, innovation and performance above all else, while giving 16 people the opportunity to fulfill their dreams and for one of them to potentially change their lives for good," said Jon Brancheau, VP Marketing, Nissan North America in the press release.
The show will be hosted by ex-NFL player Dhani Jones and at the end of each weekly episode, competitors will have their "overall performances evaluated and critiqued" by professional races Boris Said, Danny Sullivan and Maryeve Dufault according to the press release.
