GM will not be installing a CD player in the 2013 Chevrolet Spark, making the mini car the first of the badge not to have what has been a standard feature in Chevys since the 1990s.
Chevy spokesperson Afaf Farah tells Inside Line, ""It isn't so much about eliminating the CD player as it is offering to consumers the type of connectivity and technology they are interested in."
Instead, the Spark will have standard the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, which includes AM/FM stereo and Bluetooth streaming audio for music and select phones, and is compatible with apps for Pandora and Stitcher online radio.
Farah tells Inside Line that the CD player was kept off the list of features to contain costs and help keep the Spark's starting price under $13,000.
The omission is viewed as a nod to the younger buyers who Chevy hopes to attract with the Spark, and whose parents might maintain CD collections.
The Spark became available (with CD players) in various European, Asian, African, and South American markets beginning in 2010. The US version will be arriving at US dealers later this summer.
