PlayStation Users Finally Get Better Password Protection

Following numerous individual hacking incidents in the past years, including that one major attack in 2011 that left the system offline for weeks, PlayStation users now finally get more decent password protection.

The so-called two-step authentication feature has been available on other gaming accounts like Xbox and Valve for some time now. Two-step verification requires users to put in two different elements when logging into their accounts.

For PlayStation users the first step is the standard password input and the second is a six-digit code generated through an app or texted to the user's mobile device. Users will only be able to access their accounts after they have inputted the correct username and password and after successfully keying in the code sent to them.

This security measure is truly beneficial. If someone else tries to sign in on a user's account on a device that doesn't have a password, he still has to have the code sent through text. Also, if a user misplaces his PS Vita or have his PS4 stolen, he can easily disable the password through his web browser.

On August 25th, Sony announced via Twitter the availability of the two-step verification feature for PlayStation Network accounts. A direct link was provided for users to activate the said two-factor authentication offer.

For the millions of users affected in the 2011 hacking incident, this offer has been long overdue. The attack saw 77 million user accounts compromised, leaving them not able to access their own accounts for weeks. With the better verification feature, such incidents will hopefully be avoided.

The good news does not stop there. PlayStation Plus subscribers can look forward to new games in their set. Some of the rumoured games include "Killzone Shadow Fall" by Guerilla Games and "Watch Dogs" by Ubisoft for PlayStation 4 users.

PS3 gamers will also likely have "Driver: San Francisco" on their list.
