The New 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Can Do 0 - 60 Mph In First Gear And In Less Than 4 Seconds

The new 2017 Camaro ZL1 featuring a 6-speed manual transmission will be able to make the 0 - 60 mph sprint in just the first gear itself, which should lead to a run time of less than 4 secs, Sebastian Toma of AutoEvolution speculated.

The upcoming ZL1 equipped with the new 10-speed automatic transmission developed in collaboration with Ford is already known to reach the 60 mph speed mark from zero in 3.5 secs flat.

Anything less than 4 secs for the manual version of ZL1 will be spectacular since it does take time, howsoever miniscule it might be, to make the shift to 2nd gear for the car to reach 60 mph. The car also loses the forward thrust during the intervening period when the shift is being made from the 1st to the 2nd slot. Now, with no upshift required, a runtime of less than 4 secs for the 0 - 60 mph is definitely possible.

The revelation to this effect was made during the past weekend by Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser during an event that also marks the 50th anniversary of the Camaro. Oppenheiser also stated the new ZL1 will be 230 pounds lighter than its predecessor. The 2017 ZL1 also comes equipped with the LT4 6.2-litre supercharged V8 capable of 650 HP and 650 lb-ft of peak torque.

Further, as PerformanceDriver reported, the new ZL1 will also come with a line locking feature similar to what the Ford Mustang already has on offer. This will enable drivers to disengage the rear brakes so that they have about 15 secs of time to warm up the rear tyres.

Then there is also the custom launch control which along with the line lock becomes operational under 'Track Mode' while the car is in gear and the parking brake off. Drivers will access to the control right from the steering wheel buttons itself.

The 2017 Camaro ZL1 starts at $62,135 and should be hitting showrooms anytime soon.
