Long car rides are boring if you're not driving. Bringing a book or magazine helps, but having high-speed connectivity is even better.
Well here's some good news bored car riders: Audi and AT&T have reached an agreement in which all 2016 Audi's equipped with Audi connect will come with AT&T 4G LTE or 3G coverage.
The news was announced Tuesday during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
AT&T and the German automaker will allow the first-ever in-vehicle 4G LTE data connection in North American with the brand-new Audi A3 models released last year.
"Our relationship with Audi has allowed us to improve the in-car experience, beginning with the A3 last year, the first 4G LTE connected car in the U.S.," said Chris Penrose, senior vice president, Internet of Things, AT&T Mobility in a company statement.
The automaker confirmed Tuesday that connected models will include the following: A3, S3, Q3, A4, S4, all-road, A5, S5, Q5, SQ5, A6, S6, A7, S7, RS7, TT, TTS, A8, and S8.
Basically the agreement means all 2016 models with Audi connect will be sold to customers with an AT&T SIM card included that will provide connectivity to AT&T's wireless network. So if you have a smartphone, tablet or some device that connects to the internet you won't have to worry about boring car rides again.
The new A6, A7 and TT vehicles being released this year will come featured with the most advanced version of Audi connect, including over the air map updates, internet radio picture navigation and traffic updates.
"The convenience and added benefit of having Audi connect services in our vehicles, along with Wi-Fi access for up to eight devices, serves as a competitive advantage for our brand," said Filip Brabec, Director, Product Management, Audi of America in a company statement. "We have been and intend to remain innovators in this field through relationships like this one with AT&T."
Audi sold about 182,000 vehicles last year, most of which were sold with its Connect system.
General Motors started providing 4G LTE in a number of its vehicles last year. Most major automakers are expected to continue this trend as early as later this year.
