Sony PlayStation 4 Sales Reach 10 Million Since November Launch

Sony confirmed this week that it has sold 10 million PlayStation 4 units since it's launched in November of last year.

Back in April, Sony said it had sold over 7 million PS4 consoles as of April 6, and that it was struggling to keep up with consumer demand.

"Although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers," Andrew House, president and group chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, said in the statement, according to Reuters.

The $399 console went on sale back on November 29 in the United States, Western Europe and Latin America.

It also went on sale around the same time that rival Microsoft Corp's Xbox One was released in the same locations.

Microsoft said in April it had sent out 5 million Xbox One units to retailers worldwide since launching the console.

Microsoft recently announced that its new Xbox console will become the first console to be sold in China this fall in over a decade.

The Xbox One will launch on September 23 in China.

The console will be offered exclusively to China's Telecom 30 million broadband customers.

"When Xbox One launches in September, in addition to the China Telecom consumer offer, it will also be available to the general public for purchase at retail," said Joanna Li, Microsoft's China spokeswoman, according to Reuters.

Executives at Xbox hosted a news conference in Cologne on Tuesday, but didn't announce new sales data.

The PS4 has outsold the Xbox One every month except December, according to The Wall Street Journal. PS4 outsold the Xbox One at a rate of three-to-one in the financial quarter ending June 30, 2014.

Most analysts consider the 10 million mark a significant achievement for the Japanese company.

"This is a big milestone for Sony," said Chris Dring, editor of industry news site, MCV, according to the Guardian. "Not only has it broken the 10m barrier in a short period of time, it has done it amid competition from Xbox, mobile games and online hits like Minecraft. It also flies in the face of cynics who said consoles would struggle, and has smashed even Sony's own lofty expectations for the machine."
