Let's hope you're not one of the 10,000 Facebook users who reportedly downloaded the latest color-changing app scam.
Called Facebook Color Changer, the malicious app takes users to malware-infected websites, CNNMoney reported via a Cheetah Mobile Security blog post.
Scams that purport to change the color of a Facebook profile page have been around for a while. The only safe app is at ColorMyFacebook.com, according to CNNMoney.
If you click on the fake app, you will be directed to a website with a tutorial video that purportedly shows you how to change the color on your profile page. But watching the video opens up users to a malicious tool that will spam friends through their profiles.
Users who click but don't view the video will be taken to a porn video player if they're working on a PC or to an antivirus app if they're checking Facebook on a smartphone; both the video player and the antivirus app contain malware.
Cheetah Mobile researchers have found that a vulnerability in Facebook's app page lets hackers put viruses into applications based on the social network. The malicious code directs users from Facebook to phishing sites.
Anyone who has downloaded the malicious app can exorcise it by going to the Facebook app settings page and removing Facebook Color Changer. Users should additionally change their passwords and scan their devices with anti-malware software to be safe, according to Cheetah Mobile.
