Chrysler Group has announced that it will recall approximately 29,500 Fiat 500L compact vehicles over an airbag issue.
The vehicles are being called back because knee airbags may not work correctly if a driver is not wearing a seat belt, the company said in a statement on July 30.
Chrysler, a unit of Fiat SpA, said that it doesn't know of any injuries or fatalities related to the issue.
Testing conducted by the automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that the driver's knee air bag may not deploy in the proper position to protect fully the knees of an unbelted driver, a company spokesman said, according to Reuters.
Most of the Fiat 500L are registered in the United States. Approximately 4,000 vehicles are registered in Canada, according to the automaker.
Chrysler's recall affects Fiat 500L vehicles from the 2014 and 2015 model years.
Driver's knee air bags are standard equipment in the 5000L.
Owners will be notified within 60 days and can have the repair made at any registered Chrysler dealership.
All repairs will be made free of charge.
Drivers are encouraged to wear seatbelts at all times while operating a motor vehicle, but especially now to make sure the bags work properly.
