BMW has announced it is conducting a limited regional recall for certain 2001-'06 vehicles registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands and equipped with Takata airbags, according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Vehicles listed by the automaker include: the 2001-'06 BMW 325i, 325xi, 330xi and 2001-'06 325Ci and 330Ci models.
BMW said it doesn't know the exact amount of vehicles involved in the recall yet, according to Edmunds.
"For this phase of the investigation, we will not be replacing the airbags in the entire population of vehicles, but rather only in a representative sample of potentially affected vehicles," said Dave Buchko, a BMW spokesman, according to Edmunds.
Though the NHTSA is describing the announcement as a recall, BMW is calling it a "Special Technical Campaign."
This decision was a part of a larger action announced on June 23 by a number of automakers in recalls or regional field actions linked to airbag supplier Takata following an investigation conducted by the NHTSA.
BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota have all sent notifications to the NHTSA "that they are conducting limited regional recalls to address a possible safety defect involving Takata-brand airbag inflators."
The action "is influenced by a NHTSA investigation into six reports of airbag inflator ruptures, all of which occurred in Florida and Puerto Rico," NHTSA said. "Based on the limited data available at this time, NHTSA supports efforts by automakers to address the immediate risk in areas that have consistently hot, humid conditions over extended periods of time," the agency said.
BMW said dealers are being instructed to examine the airbags in all affected vehicles.
A recall, or "Special Technical Campaign" date has not been set yet by the automaker.
