Google is creating a service that will combine information from health apps and personal fitness devices, in yet another move to try one-upping rivals like Apple and Samsung.
The new service, which will be called Google Fit, will debut at the internet search browser's conference later on this month, according to a report by Forbes.
Forbes, who first reported the news, cited anonymous sources.
The report does not say whether Google Fit will be integrated into Android, Google's mobile operating system, or if it will be available as a standalone app.
Google has not commented publicly regarding the report yet.
The news comes a week after Apple announced its "Healthkit" service, which works by pulling together data like blood pressure and weight collected by a number of healthcare apps on the iPad or iPhone.
"There's lots of little players, and no data standards," says Newell. "[Apple and Samsung] are going to step in the middle of all that and facilitate the collection of that data and let developers develop on top of it." Now it looks like Google will do the same.
Samsung also pre-announced its own Sami a health platform for third-party app developers in May, complete with a $50 million innovation fund and hardware reference designs.
Health data is likely the next major battleground among tech companies like Google, Apple and Samsung as the next generation of wearable devices will let users measure sleep patterns, exercise activities, and heart rates.
Google previously launched Google Health, a collation service for personal medical records, in 2008 before shutting it down four years later.
"Google Health never took off because consumers actually don't want to aggregate their data," says Derek Newell, CEO of digital health care platform Jiff, according to Forbes. "They haven't wanted to. What they want is information. They want meaning, rewards and a feedback loop."
