Amazon Continues to Refuse Sales of Certain Warner Bros. Films

Amazon continues to refuse sales of certain products in its attempt to gain leverage in negotiations with content providers, including blocking preorders of upcoming releases from Warner Home Video like blockbuster hits "The Lego Movie" and "300: Rise of an Empire."

As of today, June 11, DVD and Blue-Ray copies of a number of Warner Bros. films can't be preordered at Amazon's website.

Users are instead asked to sign up for an email alert when the item becomes available.

Digital copies for movies like "The Lego Movie," which is currently one of the top digital home releases in the U.S., remains available for purchase through the Amazon Instant Video service.

The lack of available preorders have been prompted due to ongoing negotiations with Warner Bros. according to a report by The New York Times.

The newspaper confirmed that Amazon has been declining preorders for Time Warner movies since mid-May.

Amazon's approach with Time Warner comes during the online retailer's high-profile negotiations with bookseller Hachette.

Amazon isn't just blocking preorders of popular Hachette titles however, the site is also delaying delivery of new purchases from the publisher, according to The New York Times.

Similar strategies have been used by Amazon in the past when dealing with other companies like Germany's Bonnier Media Group.

The Hachette dispute has been under intense scrutiny lately as Amazon dominates the e-book market, whereas competitors like Apple are looking to gain ground.

Apple suffered a big setback in 2013 when it was sued by the U.S. government for conspiring with book publishers to raise e-book prices.

Apple has since appealed the ruling, according to Reuters.

Amazon and Apple also compete in sales of other digital content, like movies.

Digital copies of movies like "The Lego Movie" and "300: Rise of an Empire" are available through Apple's iTunes Store without any issue, though the company doesn't sell physical copies of media like Amazon does.
