BMW has announced that its new 2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d turbodiesel crossover returns 34 mpg on the highway and 27 mph in city driving, according to the automaker.
The new model surpassed two of its main rivals, the 2014 Audi Q5 turbodiesel model and the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec.
Official fuel economy numbers were posted recently on the EPA website.
The X3 xDrive28d comes equipped with BMW's 2.0-liter TwinPower turbodiesel four-cylinder engine rated at 180 horsepower, according to BMW.
In comparison, the EPA said that the he 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec, which is another turbodiesel model, returns 24 mpg in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway.
The 2014 Audi Q5 turbodiesel model returns 24 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.
The new BMW is also better than the 2015 X3 sDrive28i with the 2.0-liter TwinPower turbo gasoline engine, which returns 21 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.
BMW's new xDrive28d is on sale at dealerships now.
Customers can expect the diesel-powered X3 xDrive28d to cost around $42,825, including a $925 shipping fee.
The average price for a gallon of diesel fuel in the U.S. is $3.91, compared to $3.66 for regular unleaded gasoline, according to AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report, which was released on June 2.
