AT&T is bringing service to 242 more New York City subway stations as the carrier expands a contract with Transit Wireless.

The phone carrier already has service in 36 stations in midtown Manhattan and Chelsea, PCMag.com reported. AT&T is now in Phase 2 of a subway project to bring 3G and 4G LTE service, installing equipment in 40 stations.

The project includes 11 midtown Manhattan stations, Grand Central, Herald Square and Bryant Park, among others, as well as all 29 underground Queens subway stations.

"Bringing wireless service into the New York City subway has been a big step forward for our customers, and we're pleased that even more of them will be able to take advantage of it," MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast said in a statement quoted by PCMag.

"The ability to make and receive phone calls underground is an important improvement for safety and security as well as convenience, and our customers will certainly appreciate it."

AT&T's expansion comes shortly after Verizon finally began providing service in New York subway stations. The carrier, which was the last of four major providers to work with Transit Wireless, brought data service to 35 stations in January, according to PCMag.

"By extending their commitment throughout the full build of this project, AT&T is helping ensure dependable, high-speed wireless coverage in the subway system for all their customers in New York and future innovations that improve the rider experience for years to come," Transit Wireless CEO William Bayne Jr. said in a statement.

As reported by Tech Times, a list of subway stations with wireless is available here.
