General Motors is recalling its 2013-'14 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles equipped with a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, according to a statement made by the automaker.
Approximately 172,000 vehicles are affected by the recall.
The recall was issued by the automaker in order to fix an axle that can fracture and separate without warning while the vehicle is being used, according to GM.
"The interconnecting tubular bar on the front right axle half shaft on some of these vehicles may not meet GM specification and could fracture and separate," GM said in a statement. "If this occurs while driving the vehicle, steering and braking control would be maintained. However, the vehicle would lose power to the wheels and would coast to a stop.
GM said it has received "several dozen" half shaft fracture complaints, but it is "not aware" of any crashes or injuries" related to the issue.
The automaker issued a stop-sale order on March 28.
"If a vehicle with a fractured half shaft is parked on an incline without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could move unexpectedly, resulting in a possible crash or injury to pedestrians."
Chevrolet dealers are being instructed to replace the right front axle half shaft on vehicles, if necessary, free of charge.
A specific date for the recall has yet to be revealed by the automaker.
