Jaguar To Use Hybrid Powertrains For Sports Car In The Future

Jaguar is reported to be open to the possibility to use hybrid powertrains for its sports car lineup in the future. This idea is brought about after it expanded the F-Type range to include a turbo-four model.

Erol Mustafa, chief product engineer of Jaguar sports cars recently said that he wouldn't rule out hybrid performance in the future but did not mention when that would ever come to fruition. There is no exact timeline for Jaguar's release of its hybrid sports car. He added that it has to be the right application for a sports car.

Production for a Jaguar hybrid sports car has not started production but the British car manufacturer is considered an expert in coming up with this kind of technology. A classic example comes in the form of the C-X75 and its powertrain co-developed with Williams Advanced Technology.

This automotive marvel combined a 1.6-liter four-cylinder twin-charged engine with a pair of electric motors. This is responsible for delivering an insane 888-horsepower. Having such technology is highly likely to be implemented in its future sports car lineup. However, it is still not sure when the time is going to be.

Pressure may be on for Jaguar, though. Its staunch rival, Porsche, is expected to come up with a hybrid Porsche 911 soon so Jaguar may feel the pressure to release its hybrid counterpart to immediately compete.

Erol Mustafa definitely was present at the New York Auto Show, where he also talked about the reveal of the new entry-level F-Type which is powered by 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ingenium engine for the XE and XF saloons. He was also asked the possibility of having a diesel F-Type for which he did not comment on.

This was also a good moment to ask him about Jaguar having its hybrid sports car in the future. Though his answers were nothing specific towards the future of hybrid sports car, it sure is promising. At this point, it is good enough to know that it is possible and may eventually happen.

It is also good to know that Porsche will be coming up with its own version of a hybrid car, so Jaguar may well commence with the planning and production stage soon enough. Any developments on Jaguar hybrid sports car will immediately be reported.
