2018 Audi R8 Gets Laser Beam Headlights

Drivers in the United States have been jealous of European customers who were able to experience the road illuminating qualities of laser headlights. But now, the high-tech lamps are standard on the Audi R8 V10 Plus for the 2018 model year. They are also an option for the standard R8.

According to Motor Authority, the new laser lights have a blue light signature in the headlining housing. Every single headlight is equipped with a laser module that has four high intensity laser diodes. The module stacks the diodes and forms a blue laser beam where a phosphor converter transforms the light to white. The lasers activate at speeds above 40 miles per hour, and it supplements the newly standard LED headlights by projecting a low and wide beam. The Audi R8 is the first car to offer laser headlights.

As reported by Motor 1, Audi has plenty of tweaks in store for the 2018 R8 lineup. All models are now available with the firm’s smartphone interface, and the Quattro emblem is now replaced with an Audi Sport badge. The puddle lights display Audi Sport, too.

There are some aesthetic tweaks as well. The matte Anthracite finish on the V10 is now replaced with high-gloss Anthracite. The V10 rides on 19-inch split-spoke forged wheels in silver color. On top of that, it comes with Carbon Sigma high-gloss inlays. There is also a new Black Optic package for customers that prefer a darker appearance. The package includes 20-inch Y-spoke forged wheels in Anthracite, black exterior trim, matching side blades, and gloss black exhaust outlets.

The base 2018 Audi R8 V10 Coupe starts at $166,150 which is $2,000 higher than the 2017 model. The 2018 V10 Spyder starts at $178,350 which is $2,000 higher than the 2017 model. Last but not least, the top-spec 2018 V10 Plus Coupe starts at $195,650 which is almost $4,450 more than the 2017 model.
