The 2016 BMW X1 and 2017 Mini Countryman come neck-to-neck in this report. Although both models appear to be twins, the former seems more comfortable, spacious and faster than the latter.

For the purpose of this comparative review, the BMW Mini Countryman Cooper S ALL4 and the BMW X1 xDrive28i were used due to its similar mechanism. The former is an all-wheel drive model sporting a 2.0 liter turbocharged B48 four-cylinder engine. Whereas, the latter sports the same engine and a similar Haldex all-wheel drive setting.

Although both models have similar engines, there is a significant variance in terms of punch. The BMW X1 can deliver 228 horsepower while the Mini Countryman only delivers 189 horsepower. In addition, the former achieves almost 40 hp more than the latter in a shorter period as well. The almost 40 hp advantage takes only 6 seconds from 0-60 mph while the latter takes 7 seconds.

With regard to size, the two models share the same platform and wheelbase. However, the BMW X1 appears longer at 175.4 inches while the Mini Countryman measures 169.8 inches. Furthermore, the two models may have close specs on interior passenger volume, but a significant variance can be noticed on the cargo space. The former has 27 cu-ft capacity while the latter is limited to 18 cu-ft only.

On the outside, the two models possess its unique beauty. BMWBlog notes that the X1 looks more German and stiff while the Mini Countryman looks funky and odd.

In terms of performance, the X1 lacks personality and driving excitement. Whereas the Mini Countryman does not struggle around making sharp curves, Motor Authority has noted.

In terms of pricing, the 2016 BMW X1 appears more expensive at $36,095. The BMW 2017 Mini Countryman appears a little cheaper with its $31,950 price tag. However, considering the advantages mentioned above, the higher price tag accounts for the former's improved specs.
