Special Edition Ford GT Competition Series: The ‘Lightweight’ Supercar Designed For Hardcore Track Enthusiasts

The special edition Ford GT Competition Series graced the Daytona 500 race last weekend following its announcement. This new package offers reduced mass and allows the vehicle to be more track-focused.

"The Ford GT has racing in its blood," explains Raj Nair, Ford executive VP. "The Competition Series was developed with the most hardcore track enthusiasts in mind, providing a tailored set of lightweight features and unique livery to match." This means that the regular GT is a heaver compared with this recently announced special edition, but the automaker did not divulge any official numbers.

But the Ford GT has a dry weight of around 1385 kg. Deducing from the list of changes and removed parts, the special edition Ford GT Competition Series could possibly make better use of the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine. And the 647 horsepower at 6250 rpm could also be pushed mated with aerodynamic changes.

In order to shed some weight, compromises have to be made for the Ford GT Competition Series. According to Road and Track, the special edition gets a standard titanium exhaust system with unique titanium tips, unique lightweight, race-inspired engine hatch with Perspex cover and manual latch, bulkhead fitted with lightweight gorilla glass, unique exposed gloss carbon fiber stripe, exposed gloss carbon fiber lowers, mirror caps, and a-pillars, and standard lightweight gloss carbon fiber wheels with titanium lug nuts.

Incremental deletions have to be made in the interior as well to save weight, much like what happened to the upcoming Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. Say goodbye to the infotainment system as a special console plate replaces its spot. On the bright side, you get lightweight ebony black Alcantara seats, instrument panel, and headliner.

Also removed are the cupholders and air conditioning. You won't have time sipping on a cup of coffee with this bad boy. Other improvements the interior is sporting are anodized red paddle shifters, anodized red instrument panel chassis badge, and red pedal adjustment and emergency door release pull straps. Don't forget the matte dark stainless bezels, finishers, and seat x-brace, too.

The Ford GT Competition Series comes in various colors. Surely you'll have trouble choosing between frozen white, shadow black, liquid blue, ingot silver, liquid grey, and triple yellow.

Top Gear reports that these special edition supercars will only be available on US shores. But they will be available for all the production years.

If you are ready to spend more than $400K for a supercar, then head on to Ford and tell them you are cool enough for this lightweight badass supercar. If not, check out the special edition Ford GT Competition Series in the video below.
