Mercedes-Benz has come a long way since releasing its first SUV in 1998. The German luxury car manufacturer now offers six SUV brands in the United States with the GLC leading the pack.

TheMercedes-Benz GLC SUV. The luxury car manufacturer entered the SUV market with the M-Class back in 1998. It was a vehicle that came off as rugged and high-performance but still luxurious.

With six SUV brands already part of its stable, the company is working on a seventh model to be released early next year. For now, the leading SUV brand from the company is the GLC crossover.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC was released last year replacing the edgy GLK crossover. The GLK was one fantastic vehicle oozing with appeal. Unfortunately, it just didn't have what it takes to go head to head with the competition.

Early-production GLC vehicles came out in 2015 and along with the GLK only accounted for only 5.7% of luxury SUV sales in the United States. However, 2016 saw GLC sales unexpectedly go up to as much as 71.6%.

The GLC SUV weighs less than the 2013 GLK with the GLC300 and GLC300 4Matic at 275 pounds and 128 pounds lesser respectively. The GLC300 is longer by 4.7 inches and wider by 2.0. The GLC's cargo space is a lot roomier than the GLK because of its run-flat tires. All in all, its interior offers more than the expected legroom, headroom, and shoulder room with more luxurious accents than the GLK. It is comfortably quiet inside and the steering, transmission, and brakes impressively responsive.

Under the hood is where one can find a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine which can churn out 241 horsepower. Although it is less powerful than the GLK350's 3.5-liter V6, both vehicles' engine is rated at 273 pound-feet of torque. The GLC sports a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The GLC rear-wheel drive can go from 0 to zero 60 miles per hour in 6.0 seconds while the 4Matic can reach the same speed in 5.9. Direct competitors can go that fast in more or less the same time. Regardless, the GLC is an SUV that can take on the likes of Audi and BMW SUVs.
