Guangzhou Automobile Group Company (GAC) of China joined the Detroit Auto Show 2017 for the third time. Displayed in the said show were new car models that China is planning to sell in the US on 2018 to 2019, including three vehicles under the Trumpchi brand. These are GS7, GE3 and the EnSpirit Concept car. The GS7 is a 5-seater crossover while the EnSpirit will be a plug-in hybrid concept while the GE3 Electric Vehicle is still being built.
It seems that originality was not a major concern when the GAC was designing these cars. The GS7 looks similar to the Nissan Armada while the EnSpirit features several likenesses to the Tesla Model X and Model S. However, these vehicles must pass US emission test before they can be sold in the country. Regulations set by the new administration might also hinder the GAC entry to the US, according to Auto Blog.
However, despite these issues, China is hoping to start selling their cars in the United States in 2018. This is considered timely as Americans are now more inclined to buy big SUVs. The company has been selling their vehicles in several countries all over the world. With 370,000 units sold in 2016, there is a high possibility that vehicles made by government-owned GAC will be available in the American market soon, according to Motor Authority.
The most likely car to have easy entry to the US market will be the production model of the EnSpirit. This is because it is a hybrid vehicle and will have better chances of passing the tests given by the US. It will be an SUV Coupe, which might come a with 1.5-liter engine. It might be a four-cylinder engine or a three-cylinder one since there is no specific data yet, according to Car and Driver.
The three cars presented by GAC may not be as exemplary as other vehicles made by old manufacturing companies. If ever they hope to make excellent sales in the US, they have to make some improvements that will convince Americans to buy them. This might cost the company more but return of investment can be expected sooner than expected.
