HMD Global has just launched the first Android-powered smartphone carrying the Nokia brand. The Nokia 6 was unveiled in China and escaped the eyes of the world. The smartphone marks the Finnish firm's return as a phone maker, well sort of. Many consumers are asking why the new phone is only focusing on China.
China remains as one of the largest markets for consumer electronics in the world. According to Forbes magazine, HMD Global wants to re-establish the Nokia brand in a growing market than the saturated citadels of Europe and North America where the brand was once preeminent.
Since HMD is still in start-up phase, a new product is more cost-effective when introduced near the production facilities. The Nokia 6's manufacturing base is in China so there is reduced demand on logistics for HMD.
HMD Global signed a 10-year licensing deal with Nokia to manufacture a new generation of smartphones and tablets bearing the once almighty phone brand. The Android-powered handset is the first Nokia smartphone since 2014. Some of its notable features include 5.5 Full HD screen, 64GB internal storage, a 16MP main camera, and an 8MP front shooter.
The first HMD-produced phone will draw power from the Snapdragon 430 system-on-chip with 4GB of RAM to offer. HMD Global is clearly bent on marketing the phone in the mid-range market. When compared to other devices in the segment, Nokia 6 stands should-to-shoulder with the Galaxy A5, LG G3, and Sony Experia Z1.
HMD Global pledged to debut the Nokia 6 at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next month. Priced at $245, the smartphone's sales prospect will anchor on the Nokia brand, Dolby's Atmos sound processing, and aluminum unibody. The MWC will pave the way for the phone to enter more markets beyond China.
