Sony Pictures Animation's "The Emoji Movie" releases its teaser trailer featuring a vocal performance from Steven Wright, who joins the cast as Mel Meh, the father of T.J. Miller's character, Gene. The animated comedy, formerly titled "Emojimovie: Express Yourself," also stars Emmy and Tony award winner James Corden of Into the Woods and Emmy nominee Ilana Glazer of Broad City.

The Emoji Movie unleashes the secret world inside your smartphone. According to comingsoon.net, Textopolis, a bustling city, is hiding within the messaging app: where all of your favorite emojis live and are hoping to be used by the phone's owner. In this world, each of the emojis has only one facial expression except for Gene, an enthusiastic emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions.

While determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene seeks the help of his best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, all three of them will embark on an epic "app-venture" through various apps, each its own expansive world, to ultimately find the code that will fulfill Gene's one desire.

Sony Pictures Animation said in an announcement this Tuesday that it is teaming up with some of the most important apps on everyone's phone like Candy Crush Saga, Dropbox, Instagram, Spotify, Twitter, and YouTube in order to create a movie world in The Emoji Movie that mobile users will see as a reflection of their own phone usage. According to Entertainment Weekly, the teaser is "vertical and thus optimized for mobile viewing," and a full-length version will debut on theaters this Wednesday.

The Emoji Moview is produced by Michelle Raimo Kouyate (Puss in Boots, Silver Linings Playbook). The Emoji Movie, by Columbia Pictures, will hit theaters on Aug. 4, 2017. Check out the trailer below.
