After the Nintendo NES Classic Edition was launched last Nov. 11, it's been swiftly selling out of both toy and gaming stores, making the retro throwback mini console extremely difficult to locate. But now, an unlikely retailer seems to be holiday shoppers' best hope at scoring the NES in time for Christmas: Urban Outfitters, which begins sale on Dec. 6.
Many gamers searching for the nostalgia-inducing Nintendo NES have expressed frustration at stores with only limited stock that sell out quickly, or third-party sellers offering the console at bloated prices. Major retailers, meanwhile, have also been hard-pressed at coping with the skyrocketing demand for the console, according to Thrillist.
But Urban Outfitters, in a tweet that sent the gaming world into a frenzy, announced its online store would be stocked up with the Nintendo NES Classic edition minis on Tuesday for only $59.98. In a statement issued by the streetwear-selling emporium, it said inventory would be limited and confirmed that it would not be available at actual stores. The company did not say what time the sale would begin.
According to Twinfinite, although it seems strange that Urban Outfitters would be offering the Nintendo NES Classic Edition, it's not actually so far-fetched. It called the clothing store a "hipster mecca" with a penchant for stocking quirky items, including Virtual Reality headsets and drones.
Gamers are suggested to immediately check the website by midnight, given that past sales, including flash sales at Walmart, have been wiped out in under a minute. The small Nintendo NES console has been popular as a throwback to retro gaming days, with 30 classic Nintendo games built in, all for an affordable price. Among the included games are iconic titles like PAC-MAN, Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy and Kirby's Adventure.
