Two very distinctive, yet similar high-volume plug-in hybrid cars will go head-to-head for market supremacy. How will they match-up?
The plug-in version of the world's best-known and best-selling hybrid car is the new 2017 Toyota Prius Prime. On the other hand, the second-generation of the new range-extended electric car is the 2017 Chevrolet Volt.
Both have a minor difference when it comes to blending electric and gasoline process. The two are solid five-door hatchbacks, have a wide selection of standard and optional features, and are known to be better than their previous models.
The Prius Prime is on the more recent side than the Volt. People will mostly think of it as a visual improvement on the standard Prius. The Prius Prime also has a more aggressive look on the front end, as well as its horizontal rear light compared to the out-of-the-ordinary vertical shapes of the base Prius. Most models of the Prius Prime have a huge tablet-style touch screen display as well.
The Volt, now in its second year, still has that smooth, clean, and classic, but good-looking interior. Compared to Prius Prime's four-seater, Volt offers a five-seater arrangement.
With Volt's 149 horsepower and 53-mile rating from its 18.4-kwh battery, it is mostly quicker on every acceleration measure than Prius Prime's 121 horsepower and 25-mile rating from its 8.8-kwh battery. Fuel economy-wise, once the battery is all used up, Prius Prime wins with a combined 54 mpg over Volt's 42 mpg. Nonetheless, both statistics are far better than all, but a handful of other vehicles you can purchase this year.
The Chevrolet Volt starts at $34,000, while the Toyota Prius Prime opens with $28,000. Although there is a $6,000 difference between the two, the Volt's federal income-tax credits of $7,500 cuts it into half against Prius Prime's $4,500.
