Super Mario Run Costs $10 - Is It Too Much?

Here we go! The generation's favorite family computer character by Nintendo is making a comeback this 2016. Super Mario Run will soon be released in the form of a mobile app, however, it will cost $10.

Is it too much? Comparing it to a ton of other mobile game apps available, paying a $10 fee for Super Mario Run may look too much. But it isn't shocking for those with knowledge about the Nintendo franchise and the Nintendo standards, for one it is a timeless classic resurfacing and adapting to the recent technologies like the hand phones today.

For Nintendo, Mario is Mario and there's no compromising that. This is the company's rationale behind Super Mario Run's $9.99 price tag. This is almost double the price of the standard paid iOS games that usually cost $4, according to a report supplied by the Sensor Tower, a mobile analytics group.

To some non-Nintendo fan, it may appear too much. Even Minecraft, another popular character mobile game is priced at $4. But for Super Mario fans, the price tag is not surprising at all. Being able to play the most coveted character adventure game in the palm of their hands is worth the one-time payment even though it seems too much for other players.

This pricing strategy is also nothing new to game maker, Nintendo. Giving Super Mario Run a $9.99 price tag is consistent with the company's history in game pricing thus the price should not be construed as 'shocking' to the market.

"It's in line with what we were expecting, based on historic pricing trends of the company's games around a high perceived value," Sensor Tower co-founder Oliver Yeh said in an interview with Polygon.

Mobile gaming analysts and other experts say that Nintendo is still exploring the option for free-play. This is not entirely unfortunate since there's a light at the end of the tunnel because Nintendo is allegedly already trying to embrace the free-play mobile trend.

Super Mario Run will launch this Dec. 15 in the U.S, according to the World Street Journal. This will also be Nintendo's first mobile app that might pave the way for other classic games transition from old school gaming to the mobile gaming versions.

But for those itching to try the game, Nintendo is generous enough to let everyone play for FREE for a few level. However, the player will be required to pay the full amount in order to advance in the game.
