Porsche's Vision Of The Future: Mission Es Recharging At Tesla Superchargers While Tesla's Recharge At Porsche's Charging Point

Porsche said it has initiated discussions with other EV makers for setting up charging stations that are compatible with all current and future EVs. This no doubt makes for a smart solution to charging woes that EV buyers otherwise are likely to face owing to the lack of enough charging stations.

A joint approach to developing charging stations will also ensure every manufacturer of EVs does not have to go through the painstaking process of setting up their own charging points that would remain exclusive to their own cars. Tesla is the only manufacturer right now to have an extensive network of Superchargers though those are designed to serve only Tesla cars at the moment.

However, that's likely to change with the new Porsche initiative that envisages every electric vehicle getting their batteries topped up in any charging station.

"We are in contact with other manufacturers and suppliers around the world to build a fast-charging network," said Porsche CEO Olive Blume while speaking to Top Gear. "Everybody has the same need. It sounds easy but getting the details agreed is hard. We already have the clear technical concept. It can even work with Teslas, with an adapter."

While it is understandable it is only Tesla that has found mention in Blume's speech (Tesla being the segment leader at the moment), Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche too has confirmed they are also in discussion with Porsche over shared charging network, Electrek reported.

Porsche had earlier announced its 800-volt charging network would be capable of recharging about 80 percent of the Mission E's batteries in just 15 mins, about half the time that the Tesla superchargers are able to do at the moment.

There is already a beeline among automakers to launch pure electric cars with companies like Daimler, Volkswagen, Audi, Chevrolet et all having all announced their forthcoming EV models.

Tesla has always been open to the idea of letting other cars use its superchargers though the modalities for the same need to be worked out. Just as there is a measure of how much one can tank up from a gas station and for how much money, EV makers sure will have to devise a similar methodology for charging EVs that would be universally acceptable.
