Volkswagen has been recovering from the emissions scandal after announcing that they did cheat emission tests last year and now the German automaker aims to sell one million electrified vehicles by 2025.
Left Lane reported that in the announcement of Volkswagen, they said that gearing towards the electric vehicle industry is non-avoidable as they want to meet the strict CO2 regulations that will be coming into effect all over the world in the coming years. With that said, the company will launch 20 models of electric vehicles by 2020 and expects that the sales will increase until 2025.
According to Auto Evolution, the European Union will have stricter emission regulations by year 2021 and this means that Volkswagen Groups, and all of its brands, will have to reach a strict average. Electric vehicles provide extremely low CO2 emissions as compared to conventional vehicles.
Volkswagen's new electric vehicle models will include the variants from their other concepts such as Porsche Mission E and the Audi e-tron quattro. Other reports are saying that Volkswagen is currently working on an all-electric vehicle that will go up against the Chevrolet Bolt and the Prius model called XL3, which has not been out yet. e-Golf is also said to have a makeover.
Automotive News also reported that Volkswagen offers three electric cars which are the e-Up, e-Golf, and Audi R8 e-tron. They also have six plug-in hybrids namely the Golf GTE, the Passat GTE, the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, the Q7 e-tron Quattro, the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid and Cayenne S E-Hybrid.
Although there are no reports as to what new models Volkswagen will be working on, it is said that the available electric cars and the hybrid cars will be getting upgrades. For this year, Volkswagen is expected to build 12,100 e-Golfs and 13,400 Golf GTEs by the end of this year.
The Volkswagen Group is not the only carmaker planning to invest more on electric vehicles as Volvo announced earlier this year that they aim to also sell one million of the same kinds of vehicles by 2025
