Ford is joining the roster of carmakers that wants out grapple Tesla Model 3 out of the market. It has been noted that Ford did not deny the notion of building its own version of a 200-mile-per-charge electric vehicle to surpassTesla Model 3 and Chevy Bolt.
A post from Business Insider reports that Ford Motors is moving away from its comfort zone by considering the possibility of countering the rising popularity of the electric car vehicles. When CEO Mark Fields was rigged when questions regarding the company's stand on the development of electric cars, Fields has affirmed that Ford is working on something.
According to Fields, "Absolutely. We want to be either among the leaders or in a leadership position." Given the statements, it remains uncertain on whether Ford is working on a model that will outpace Tesla Model 3 or Chevy Bolt.
It stands to reason that the aims and vision of Ford to remain on the top pedestal is crucial for the carmaker. To gather the sales and revenues on its net, Ford needs to modify and enhance its product segments. Additional reports from Car and Driver has implied that Ford's current electric-car offering is only the Focus Electric and since the car only has a 76-mile, it cannot par with Tesla, Chevy and Nissan's product segments.
Automotive News also disclosed that if the plan comes to fruition, Ford has affirmed the name as the "Model E" which is anticipated to begin productions in 2019 in one of its new plant in Mexico. However, Kevin Layden, the director of Ford's electrification programs and engineering said that for now, the Focus segment is sufficient to counter the tide of electric vehicles.
"I think right now with the launch of the Focus Electric at 100 miles, it is going to satisfy a big chunk of the population," Layden said. "It's going to be really affordable and a step up from where we are now."
Although Ford has affirmed in joining the electric vehicle frenzy that Tesla Model 3, Chevy Bolt , and Nissan LEAF has ignited, it remains unsettled on when and how Ford would join the competitive world of electric vehicles.
