The McLaren F1 GT Longtail is the rarest version of the F1, with just three produced, including this prototype, chassis #056. McLaren never sold the car, and, as it happens, is keen on showing it off to build excitement for its newer products.

The F1 GT was conceived during the 1996 FIA GT Championship, when McLaren’s GT racing program began to slip behind its competitors. McLaren would build a longer, wider, and more aerodynamically effective McLaren F1 GTR, leveraging the same loopholes as Porsche and AMG Mercedes. In order to adhere to the letter of FIA law, McLaren had to produce, market and sell a road car.

The McLaren F1 GT is 4.7 inches wider than a standard F1, with most of the width built out around the rear wheels, which are an inch and a half wider each.

True to its name, the Longtail is an incredible 25.2 inches longer than the standard F1 roadcar. Most of the length is added onto the rear, and you can see the seam where the normal car ends. The added ducts are for gearbox cooling.

The same incredible mechanical specifications of the McLaren F1 are underneath the skin here — 627 horsepower from a 6.0 liter BMW V12, and engine bay lined with gold, and a top speed in the neighborhood of 240 miles per hour.

On the GT, there are no rear glass windows. Instead, the gear of the cabin is covered in bare carbon fiber,

The gear selector and vital controls are all conveniently at your side. Normally on an F1, the carbon frame rail is left in bare carbon fiber, but the GT is upholstered with leather.

Wider magnesium wheels are inspired by the ones on the F1 GTR racecar.

The taillights are sourced from an Italian supplier, and during the 90s, could be found on buses, lorries, and 200 mile per hour supercars. To accommodate the longer tail, the lights were repositioned and the exhaust pipes had to be extended.
