Lighter components and smarter software bring down the cost and complexity of modern all-wheel drive systems, making them more prevalent in a wider range of vehicle types.
Those who want a high-riding driving position but don't need the space of a larger utility can select from a growing field of compact crossovers. The Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax and Mazda CX-3 are the latest contenders in a growing field of small-but-tall utilities that offer added traction at all four wheels. The Trax targets value-conscious customers, while the CX-3 caters to near-luxury buyers with an impressively detailed mixed-media interior.
The Subaru WRX STi, a long-standing showcase of all-wheel drive's high-performance potential, faces new competition as its chief rival retires. The Ford Focus RS, derived from a European rally car namesake, joins the Volkswagen Golf R to close the rivalry gap left by the outgoing Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Each turbocharged, all-wheel-drive model produces in excess of 300 horsepower, and is available with an honest three-pedal manual gearbox to provide a suitably visceral experience at speed.
