A Utah woman gave birth on the side of an interstate highway this weekend after attempting to drive herself to the hospital.

Devi Mariah Ostler went into labor on Saturday before she got in the car, according to an Associated Press report. Ostler became too overwhelmed to drive, so she called 911.

Ostler, 32, originally tried telling the dispatcher that she was on the freeway, but she soon interrupted herself to say her water broke.

"I'm trying to get over into the other lane - I need to push!" she said, according to the AP report, citing Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Jalaine Hawkes.

After telling the dispatcher her name and providing a description of her vehicle, she yelled out "The baby is coming!"

Ostler pulled over on the side of Interstate 15 as dispatcher Brittney Chugg walked her through the labor. Chugg told her to lay her set back, breathe, and even hold the baby's head so it wasn't born "too fast."

"We knew. We just knew it was going to happen. There was going to be a baby on the side of the freeway right then," said Chugg during a news conference held on Sunday, according to the Deseret News.

Fortunately, Police Chief Jean Loveland from Willard and Utah Highway Patrol trooper Josh Carr were able to reach Ostler in a timely fashion. She gave birth to a 9.9-pound baby boy less than a minute after the two reached her on the side of the interstate.

"He came right out in my hands," said Carr, who told her the gender of the baby for the first time. "It was very emotional. Probably next to my own children's' birth, it was a very satisfying moment in my career."

The mother and baby were both taken to a hospital located in Brigham City, which is 60 miles from Salt Lake City. The two are in good condition, according to the AP report.

The boy is Ostler's third child. A name had not been decided on as of press time.
