Federal regulators have given the 2015 Lincoln MKZ five stars for safety after three national crash tests.

The new sedan received five stars in the front crash test, four stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test for an overall five-star rating, Edmunds.com reported.

The 2015 MKZ competes in its segment with the Audi A4, Buick Regal and Lexus ES 350, all of which also earned five-star safety ratings following NHTSA crash tests, according to Edmunds.

Available at dealerships now, the MKZ has also been named a Top Safety Pick by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The sedan received "Good" ratings in crash tests conducted by IIHS and an "Acceptable" rating for the small overlap front crash test, which is intended to mimic a collision where the vehicle's front corner hits another vehicle or an object.

The NHTSA rating applies to versions of the 2015 MKZ equipped with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The 2015 Lincoln MKZ hybrid version is also included in the five-star rating.

In standard trim, the MKZ's safety equipment includes "antilock brakes, electronic stability control and eight air bags, including knee air bags for the driver and front passenger," according to Edmunds.
