2015 Range Rover HSE Td6: 2015 Detroit Auto Show

Jan 11, 2015 06:00 PM EST | Jeff Jablansky

After years of spending time sipping unleaded fuel in the United States, the luxurious Range Rover is about to get a more efficient option: a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine. With a projected range of 658 miles per tank, this high-dollar sport-utility vehicle is in it for the long haul.

What is it?

The addition of a diesel option will make Land Rover's posh SUV an even more attractive buy. Land Rover claims improvements of nearly 30 percent over its current V-8 powerplant, and a resultant 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway. It will make the Range Rover competitive against large SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GL350.

What's new?

The turbodiesel V-6 is new to the United States, although other countries have reaped its economical benefits for some time.

Most fascinating feature?

A "misfueling protection device," owing to the wider diesel fuel nozzle, prevents owners from filling their diesel-powered Range Rover with premium unleaded instead.

Can I buy it?

The 2015 Range Rover HSE Td6 is set to go on sale in the United States by fall 2015.
