Short Take: For 2015, a Dash of Style Livens Up the Funky Nissan Juke

If you like the Nissan Juke, the offbeat turbocharged hatchback masquerading as a small SUV that was introduced nearly four years ago, then there's a lot more to like with a mild styling reflash for 2015. Content with the market response for a tall crossover that looks like nothing else on the market, Nissan chose not to mess with success before an all-new model ultimately appears.

As the Juke enters mid-life, with it comes a mild cosmetic refresh. We recently had the chance to sample the newest Juke along a short road course in California's Napa Valley.

What's new?

The quickest way to distinguish some 2015 Juke crossovers from their older brethren is to see if they are enhanced via Nissan Color Studio, a bespoke accessory set that provides color contrast. Everything from the mirror caps to the wheel insets can feature a contrasting color, a la the Mini Cooper options sheet, as well as some interior trim pieces and surrounds. The model pictured, in standard blue paint unadorned, is not a good example.

Trust us: Fully decked out, Jukes optioned with Nissan Color Studio paint are recognizable from a mile away. In terms of color choices, unlike the pick-and-mix body panels of the Smart Fortwo, you will have to live with your customized Juke choice.

Other than the color enhancements, there are revised headlights and accent lights on the outside, and a host of upgrades to technology and infotainment inside.

How does it drive?

Exactly the same as the model it displaces, which is to say cheerfully and capably. Steering has weight and tautness, the suspension is firm without being too harsh, torque steer abounds, and the brakes are strong enough. In standard trim, the Juke is sporty without being performance-oriented, and in raucous Nismo and Nismo RS trims, power seems to come on in a neverending surge.

All Juke models are equipped with a 188-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The continuously variable automatic transmission is our choice for smooth shifts, and all-wheel drive remains optional.

On the short road course, the Juke impressed by being impressively normal to drive, although cabin noise is less than refined.

What's its specialty?

Being the awkward one of the bunch who overdelivers.

Does it have competition?

While no automaker has seen fit to go head-to-head with the unconventional Juke, the 2015 model will have competition from hatchbacks, crossovers, and SUVs alike. Think of it as a taller Volkswagen Golf, slightly more pugnacious and less refined, and the same standard set of competitors applies.

Overall

Color and trim permutations give shoppers even more ways to customize their offbeat crossover.

Highs

Same great size and utility, driving dynamics, and price.

Lows

Same polarizing styling, now made even more polarizing with optional contrasting colors.
