Apple's next-generation iPad Air will be offered in gold, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The publication cites sources familiar with Apple's iPad launch plans as the company is looking to increase tablet sales by adding a gold rear case option.

Other choices include space gray and silver. The next-generation 9.7-inch iPad Air is expected to debut this fall, according to AppleInsider.

Apple's first gold colored device, the iPhone 5s, was release last year, and the company still makes the option available for its current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones.

The gold iPad Air will likely feature a white faceplate similar to Apple's gold and silver iPhone versions. This leaves only space gray models with black bezels.

Last month, KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the "iPad Air 2" would come in the same color palette as Apple's new iPhone.

Kuo added that the iPad mini with Retina display could come equipped with Touch ID fingerprint recognition, a feature a number of analyst hoped would come with last year's updated iPad.

Bloomberg didn't mention plans for the iPad mini with Retina display, which is also due to for an upgrade, but mentioned the next-gen iPad Air could be announced officially later on this month.

AppleInsider is reporting that the Cupertino, California-based company has set a mid-October deadline for internal projects and marketing associated with major product lines.

If this is true a media event would likely take place sometime during the second half of the month.

Apple shares fell 1.6 percent to $99.18 at the close in New York, according to Bloomberg. The stock has climbed 24 percent this year.
