Film Your Own GIFs with the Otto Camera

A new Kickstarter project has launched for a colorful camera that can be used to churn out your own homemade animated GIFs.

With a lens and a Raspberry Pi microcomputer inside its bright blue case, Otto has a tiny crank that can be turned forward to record, kept still to pause and turned backward to stop the recording, The Verge reported.

The Kickstarter listing compares the whimsical five-megapixel camera to recording a Vine or Instagram video.

"It looks like a baby's first camera, but the blue and black plastic Otto camera is more than just a toy-like point-and-shoot," reads the Kickstarter page. "It's a camera made specifically with the intention of creating instant GIFs ... and it's pretty delightful."

The resulting recording appears on your phone in animated GIF format with the help of an app. Otto's creators also have a range of filters and overlays for the clip and the ability to tweak settings for time-lapse video or other options. As added perks for hackers, the camera has an available software development kit as well as a micro USB port.

While a GIF-making camera would be fun to have, The Verge pointed out that turning a crank could make for unstable shots for a while and also noted that the GIF capability is the only real standout feature.

One day into the Kickstarter campaign, Otto had nearly $19,000 of its $60,000 goal. Pledges of $199 or more will receive a camera.
