General Motors said this week that it has shipped "thousands" of kits with new ignition switches, key sets, and ignition cylinders to its dealerships as repairs will begin in the controversial recall of 2.6 million small vehicles for faulty ignition switches.
Letters were mailed last week to over 1.4 million owners of 2003-'07 vehicles.
The letters say that customers should contact their local GM dealer to make an appointment for the repairs.
"Wait times may be longer depending on the busyness of a particular dealership," GM said in a statement posted on its website.
Repairs will take approximately 90 minutes, according to GM.
The recall has been linked to at least 13 fatalities.
Recalled vehicles include:
-2005-'10 Chevrolet Cobalt
-2005-'07 Pontiac G5
-2003-'07 Saturn Ion
-2006-'11 Chevrolet HHR
-2006-'10 Pontiac Solstice
-2007-'10 Saturn Sky.
GM's 4,300 dealer service departments are involved in the repairs.
The automaker has not set a specific timetable for when repairs should be completed, but it expects repairs to be finished by sometime this fall.
