2011-'14 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango SUVs Recalled Over Brake Issue

Chrysler will recall its 2011-'14 Dodge Durango  and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles to address an issue that could limit the braking ability of affected vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Over 867,795 vehicles are affected by the recall.

Affected vehicles were manufactured from January 5, 2010 through September 8, 2013.

"The subject vehicles have a brake booster with a center shell that may corrode and allow water to get inside," said NHTSA in its summary. "The water inside could freeze and limit the braking ability of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash."

Chrysler confirmed that it is aware of one related accident, though no injuries have been linked to the issue yet.

The automaker launched an investigation into the SUVs after receiving a number of customer complaints regarding "excessive brake-pedal firmness," according to Chrysler.

Of the affected vehicles, an estimated 644,354 can be found in the U.S., 42,380 in Canada, 21,376 in Mexico and an additional 159,685 outside the NAFTA region, according to the NHTSA.

Chrysler dealers are being instructed to add a water diverter shield to the booster after the booster has been tested to make sure it it can hold an acceptable amount of vacuum pressure, according to the NHTSA.

If an inspection determines an unacceptable loss of vacuum pressure, the booster will be replaced, free of charge.

The recall will begin sometime in May.
