Mars One has announced plans to build a simulated colony on Earth to prepare potential colonist for life on Mars to make sure they can handle isolated conditions on the Red Planet before giving them a one-way ticket.
The organization is a private, Netherlands-based company hoping to put a human on Mars no later than 2025.
Mars One has yet to pick a location for its first simulator yet, according to Space.com.
"We are very eager to get started constructing actual hardware for our mission that is important for training future Mars One crews and preparing them for their life on Mars," Bas Lansdorp, co-founder of Mars One, said in a statement. "We are going from theory to practice.
The first Mars One colonists won't be coming back to Earth however. They'll be asked to live out the rest of their days in a "thick-walled habitat," protected against cosmic rays and solar particles, according to Space.com.
They'll be required to use spacesuits to go outside, since Marsh lacks a breathable atmosphere.
Through the mock habitats, the organization is attempting to recreate isolated conditions, though at first, they won't contain actual life support systems that people need to survive on Mars.
Mars One also confirmed late last week that is has chosen NASA capsule designer and contractor Kristian von Bengston to lead the project from Denmark, according to Space.com.
Over 200,000 people sent in applications for a seat on a Mars One voyage. Just 1,058 aspiring space explorers were selected to move in to the next round back in Dec. 2013.
Just six groups of four will be selected to become "full-time employees" of the Mars One adventure.
Company officials have said they would like to broadcast the selection process as part of a reality show.
