British Prime Minister David Cameron has big plans for the United Kingdom's next technological advances that include a burgeoning Internet of things and wireless connection so fast it can download a movie in just one second.
At this week's CeBIT technology fair, Cameron called for Britain and Germany to collaborate on future projects, The Telegraph reported.
"Our economic relationship goes from strength to strength," said Cameron, as quoted by The Telegraph. "We must go on investing in science. Britain and Germany work together in this space."
The two countries are working together to develop 5G Internet connection using research from University of Dresden, Kings College University in London and the University of Surrey, according to Techie News.
Cameron announced that an extra £45 million, or about $75 million USD, in government funding will go toward furthering the Internet of things. With the funding boost, government investments into the Internet of things will total £73 million, or $121.5 million USD.
"These are developments that could allow literally billions of everyday objects to talk to each other over the internet--using low-cost, low-power chips. And this has enormous potential to change our lives," said Cameron, as quoted by Techie News.
In the Internet of things world, ordinary objects such as thermostats and watches would have wireless connectivity.
"Electricity meters that talk to the grid to get you the best deals. Health monitors that keep an eye on your heart rate. Water pipes that warn of a fall in pressure," Cameron listed some examples.
The UK and Germany can play to their strengths as they work together, Britain offering software, services and design to complement Germany's outstanding engineering and manufacturing skills, he said.
"We are on the brink of a new industrial revolution and I want us--the UK and Germany--to lead it," Cameron said.
Being on the cutting edge of technology is essential for both countries.
"This is a world on fast-forward. A world of permanent technological revolution," said Cameron, as reported by Techie News.
"And in this world, countries like the UK and Germany will only succeed if we have a relentless drive for new ideas and innovations."
