Ford has officially unveiled its new 2015 F-150 pickup truck at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The automaker confirmed at the event that it will go on sale later this year along with new specifications, according to the Associated Press.
The body of Ford's new F-150 will be made up of mostly aluminum for the first time ever, making it 700 pounds lighter than its predecessor. The frame underneath the body is still steel however.
Other new features include: LED spotlights on the side mirrors and in the bed, LED headlamps, and BoLink, a system of metal brackets and cleats inside the bed to secure items like storage bins or ramps, according to AP.
Seats are approximately 20 millimeter further away than the seats found in the previous model, to provide more space for passengers and for a wide center console with a storage compartment that's approximately 2 feet deep.
"F-150 is well-known for being built Ford tough," Mark Fields, Ford chief operating officer, said in a press statement. "Now, it is both tough and smart."
Brand new optional camera system allows customers to see around the entire truck, according to AP.
Safety features include blind-spot detection, lane-keeping system that warns drivers when they're drifting into another lane and inflatable safety belts.
Two new engine options are available for the F-150. Engines available include a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 and a 3.5-liter V6. A 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and the 5.0-liter V8, which was for the previous model.
"More than ever before, customers want a truck that is a dependable partner, mobile office and a go-anywhere workshop," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president who heads the automaker's global product development, in a statement. "To meet the needs of our truck customers, we created smart new features and a whole new approach to using advanced materials and engines to improve capability and efficiency."
Ford is no longer making its 6.2-liter V8 or 3.7-liter V6 available, according to the automaker.
The truck will be manufactured in Dearborn, M.I. and Claycomo, M.O.
The vehicle's price and fuel economy estimates will be released at a later date.
