Ford Motor Company is recalling certain Lincoln MKZ Hybrid vehicles due to a malfunctioning error that could cause the transmission range sensor not to work properly.
The recall affects vehicles made for the 2013-2014 model years and manufactured from April 26, 2012, through September 24, 2013, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"Due to a manufacturing error, the transmission range sensor may not function properly allowing the affected vehicles to be shifted out of the Park position without first applying the brake pedal," said the NHTSA in their statement about the issue.
The vehicles are at risk of unintentionally shifting out of Park, without the brake pedal being pressed, which could cause the vehicle to roll and cause a crash.
The recall is expected to start sometime in January.
Ford is instructing dealers to update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with brand new software, which will be completed free of charge, according to the NHTSA.
Currently, the MKZ vehicles "fail to conform with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 114, 'Theft Protection,'" according to the NHTSA.
