Volkswagen Recall: 3,800 Jetta Hybrids Called Back

Dec 17, 2013 09:45 AM EST | Matt Mercuro

Volkswagen is recalling its 2013-'14 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid vehicles to fix gearbox control module corrosion that could cause a loss of power while the vehicle is moving, according to a summary by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Due to gearbox fluid additives, the control module within the gearbox may corrode," said the NHTSA. "The deposits from this corrosion may cause an electrical short and result in a stall-like condition.

Approximately 3,837 vehicles are involved in the recall. The NHTSA says that the loss of power greatly increases the chance of a crash.

The affected vehicles were produced from October 2012 through October 2013.

Volkswagen have told federal safety regulators that it has not been notified of any crashes or injuries in the U.S.

"However, failures have been reported in foreign markets," Volkswagen said in documentation this week. "In an abundance of caution, Volkswagen is recalling all affected vehicles worldwide to address this issue."

Other vehicle systems, like the engine, brakes, and steering, are unaffected by the issue, according to the automaker.

Volkswagen dealers are being instructed to replace the gearbox oil with a non-corrosive option. The recall has already started, according to the NHTSA.
