A Florida family who spends a lot of time hunting for treasure recently discovered $300,000 worth of it near an historic wreck site in the Atlantic Ocean.
Rick and Lisa Schmitt, along with their two children, found gold chains and coins from a wreckage that saw 11 ships go down during a hurricane in 1715 according to Reuters.
"What's really neat about them is they are a family, they spend family time together out there and the most amazing part about them is they always believed this day would come," said Brent Brisben, whose company 1715 Fleet - Queens Jewels LLC officially owns the rights to the site where the gold was discovered.
Approximately $400 million worth of treasure was on board the ships when the wreck happened, of which $175 million has been recovered.
Brisben's company purchased the rights to the site from the legendary treasure hunter Mel Fisher back in 2010 according to Reuters. He allows others to search under subcontracting agreements.
The Schmitts have been looking for treasure for a number of years, never giving up hope that one day they'd actually find some.
Florida will be allowed to take 20 percent of the treasure for display at a state museum, but the rest will be split evenly between Brisben and the Schmitt family.
The wreckage was used for the 1977 film "The Deep" and the 2008 film "Fool's Gold."
