2015 Ford Mustang Rumors: New Pony Car Will be 400 Pounds Lighter?

The 2015 Ford Mustang will be smaller and will weigh several hundred pounds lighter than its predecessor according to Edmunds.

The 2014 V6 coupe weighs approximately 3,523 pounds when equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and 3,501 pounds with a six-speed manual transmission, according to Ford's website.

The 2014 V6 convertible has a curb weight of 3,652 pounds with a six-speed automatic transmission and 3,630 pounds with a six-speed manual transmission.

"I know they are trying to remove a minimum of 400 pounds," said a source familiar with the Mustang program who asked not to be identified, according to Edmunds. "The big thing is that it will be a 'smarter' size."

Ford has yet to comment officially about its next vehicle weighing less as of press time.

The 2014 Mustang couple with a V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission returns 19 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway according to the EPA.

If the weight loss is true, the 2015 model will return much better numbers.

"That car will be around for 8 to 10 years so it has to meet anticipated regulatory requirements for that long period of time," the source said according to Edmunds. "The overall length will be something like 8 percent shorter,"

The 2014 Mustang is 188.5 inches long and 73.9 inches wide according to Ford's website.

The 2015 Mustang will be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show this January or at the 2014 New York Auto Show in April.

A convertible option will be unveiled at a different auto show.
