Discovery Channel and shark fans around the world feel duped after a program called "Megalodon: The Monster That Lives," wasn't a scientifically-proven documentary.
The film, which aired on Discovery Channel on Aug. 4, supposedly features an investigation on a gigantic shark which could still be swimming in Earth's waters today.
Only problem is the creature might have never existed and Discovery Channel didn't make that point clear until after the two-hour special was over.
As the documentary ended, the channel showed a notice saying "Megalodon" was a film about a "legend," and while they claim the shark was real, theorist are still debating that point to this day.
"Though certain events and characters in this film have been dramatized, sightings of (the giant creature) continue to this day. Megalodon was a real shark. Legends of giant sharks persist all over the world. There is still debate about what they might be," the message said.
Discovery Channel is scheduled to re-air "Megalodon: The Monster That Lives" on August 11 at 10 a.m ET.
Discovery Channel defended the decision to include the program in this year's "Shark Week," saying a disclaimer was included.
"With a whole week of Shark Week programming ahead of us, we wanted to explore the possibilities of Megalodon," Michael Sorensen, executive producer of Shark Week, said in a press statement. "It's one of the most debated shark discussions of all time, can Megalodon exist today? It's Ultimate Shark Week fantasy. The stories have been out there for years and with 95% of the ocean unexplored, who really knows?"
