Honda Motors claimed this week that they "flying sports car" market will be profitable by the end of the decade, a bold claim considering not a single flying car has been successfully released to the public yet.

The company, which is preparing to enter the business jet market next year, said the "flying sports car" market should be profitable in around five years Michimasa Fujino, president of Honda Aircraft, said in an interview according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

Honda is set to start delivering planes in 2014, though Fujino declined to say how many orders the company has received thus far. Fujino did say that sales of the $ 4.5 million jet plane could reach 80 to 90 units annually.

"We want to evoke new demand to make the pie bigger for all," said Fujino according to Bloomberg Businessweek "As the pie becomes bigger, we'll all be motivated to sharpen our competitiveness, which will in turn attract more new demand."

Other companies are close to releasing a flying car like the Massachusetts-based Terrafugia.

Terrafugia announced earlier this year that they're hoping to release a flying car to the public by 2015 or 2016. The company originally stated that the car would be released a lot sooner than that but they've struggled to get permission from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Once the first model is released, a second flying car capable of carrying four people with a top speed of 200 mph has been planned. The company is called the second model the TF-X, which is still in its earliest stages of design.

Terrafugia said people would not have to become licensed pilots to operate the vehicle since the most difficult elements of flying the TF-X would happen "automatically" through computer controls. The vehicle would be similar to a self-driving car according to Terrafugia.
